David Eldon is one of the most respected bankers in Asia and the Middle East.
He commenced his banking career with an Australian Bank in London in 1964, joining the British Bank of the Middle East (HSBC Group) in January 1968, in which month he was posted to Dubai. In 1979, after a variety of postings around the Middle East he went to Hong Kong, returning to The Middle East in 1984 when he was appointed Deputy Managing Director of The Saudi British Bank, based in Riyadh.
He returned to Hong Kong in 1987 with responsibility for the Group's largest multinational corporate clients and at the end of 1988 was appointed Chief Executive Officer Malaysia.
David returned once again to Hong Kong in 1992 where, after a temporary assignment as General Manager Hong Kong and China, he took up the position of General Manager in The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation's International department. He was made an Executive Director of the Bank in 1994, Chief Executive Officer in 1996 and Chairman in 1999.
In 1996 David also became Chairman of Hang Seng Bank, a member of the HSBC Group, and was appointed a director of HSBC Holdings plc in 1999. He retired from the Group in 2005.
He is currently Senior Adviser, PricewaterhouseCoopers Hong Kong. He is non-executive Chairman of the Dubai International Financial Centre Authority, and senior independent non-executive director of the Singapore listed Noble Group Limited. He is Special Adviser to the South Korean Presidential Committee for National Competitiveness, Office of the President , the first non-Korean to hold such a position.
He is a Director of listed companies Eagle Asset Management Ltd and Shui On Construction and Materials Co Ltd. He is Past Chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, Founding Member and past Chairman of the Seoul International Business Advisory Council, in addition to a number of corporate advisory roles, and Government and community appointments in Hong Kong.
